An update from Graci Djuranovic, Chair, Bruce Contemporaries

Dear Bruce Contemporaries,

We hope you and your families are staying safe and healthy.

As you may have seen in today's email from Museum Director Robert Wolterstorff, the Bruce Museum is closed and has cancelled all upcoming activities. In addition, the Annual Bruce Gala on May 9 has been cancelled. They will continue to send updates via email.

The Bruce Contemporaries Committee has also decided to postpone our two upcoming events: the private art collection tour on April 2 and the Glass House tour in May. We hope to be able to reschedule these events soon and get some great new events on the calendar for the summer and fall.

As we’re all home and looking for fun things to do, we wanted to share some interesting arts and science-related links and activities we’ve found for you!

Tastings and Tour at the Bruce

On February 27, the Bruce Contemporaries hosted members and friends for a special Nordic-themed evening, inspired by the Bruce Museum's exhibition On the Edge of the World: Masterworks by Laurits Andersen Ring from SMK—the National Gallery of Denmark.

Jacob Grier, Portland, OR-based author, mixologist and aquavit expert, kicked off the event with a tasting of Aquavits, the 'Spirits of the Nordics.' During this session, Jacob shared the history and uniqueness of the category while leading a sensory experience with a few different styles of aquavits: Aalborg Taffel, Aalborg Jubileum and Linie Aquavit.

Following the tasting, guests enjoyed a private tour of the Bruce's L.A. Ring exhibition with Corinne Flax, the Bruce Museum's Manager of School and Tour Services. For most, this was the first time experiencing the newly renovated art galleries at the Bruce Museum!

The Bruce Contemporaries would like to thank our event supporters. Beautiful flowers were provided by Winston Flowers and delicious appetizers were provided by A Dash of Salt Catering.

The Most Powerful Woman in the Room is You

On Thursday, February 20, the Bruce Contemporaries attended a talk and book signing at Weber Fine Art Gallery by Lydia Fenet, author of The Most Powerful Woman in the Room is You. Ms. Fenet, Managing Director and Global Head of Strategic Partnerships at Christie's Auction House, who has raised more than half a billion dollars for nonprofits around the world, entertained the audience with inspirational, witty and warm stories.  The gallery hung a special show of all-female artists in honor of the event. The evening was co-hosted by Caitlin Davis and Weber Fine Art.

Discoveries in Art

On January 7, the Bruce Contemporaries were invited to view an incredible private collection of contemporary Cuban art in Old Greenwich. The collection includes pieces by artists such as William Perez and Hector Frank Hereros Garcia among many more. The collectors have created an informative website that showcases the pieces in the collection amounting to over 400 works! Please discover the collection here: https://www.discoveriesinart.com/
